Steven Johnston
Diamond H Transport Warrington Has Helped Steve Johnson though his Career as a speedway Rider for the Last 17 years.
Steven Paul Johnston hails from Perth, Australia and was born on 12 October 1971. He originally began his British career with Sheffield in 1992 and again lined-up with the South Yorkshire outfit at the start of the following season, prior to a July move to Long Eaton. Known affectionately throughout the speedway world as ‘Johno’, the popular Aussie remained with the Invaders until the end of the 1996 campaign, giving the club excellent service with 1,149-points from a total of 130 league matches.
In 1997, a change saw him link with Ipswich for the first season of the newly-formed Elite League and it turned into a successful move as he posted a career high 8.25 average with the Witches. The exuberant rider then enjoyed a five-year stint with Oxford (1998-02), during which time he played a key role in their 2001 League Championship success when he rode alongside the likes of Leigh Adams, Todd Wiltshire, Brian Andersen and the Dryml brothers. During his stint with the Cheetahs he appeared in 141 league matches, from which a total of 1,049-points were gleaned.
Johnston spent the 2003 campaign with Belle Vue, where he remained ever-present throughout the 28-match league programme and accumulated 183-points for a very solid 6.11 average.
Co-promoter Alan Rossiter’s first signing of the new Elite League era at Blunsdon, the Australian has previously ridden for Swindon on just one occasion as a guest when he scored 5+1 points from the No.3 berth in a home league match against Ipswich on 2 July 1998.
Johno returns to ride for the Witches after a ten year absence. Johno left the Witches after the 1997 season thereby missing out on the Witches memorable treble winning campaign in 1998. Johno himself has been part of two league title winning sides, Oxford in 2001 and again with Coventry in 2007. Hugely popular this Aussie has ridden for a total of 9 clubs in the UK including Sheffield, Long Eaton, Wolves,Lakeside (formerly Arena-Essex) and Coventry. He had his testimonial in 2008 at Coventry.
